Scripture
the bible
Lutherans believe the Bible is the written word of God. Scripture creates and nurtures faith through the work of the Holy Spirit and points us to Jesus Christ, the living Word and center of our faith. In reading the Bible, we are invited into a relationship with God that both challenges us and promises us new life. We also recognize that the Bible was written over thousands of years and is a product of specific times and cultures. Martin Luther once called scripture the cradle of Christ. We come to know God through Jesus, and we know Jesus through scripture, but baby and cradle are not the same thing, nor are they of equal importance. Therefore, we worship the God who is revealed through scripture, but not the book itself.
